Which Shade of Blue Looks Best on You?

We all love a blue dress shirt but did you know that there are better shades of blue for each type of complexion?

Many men actually don’t even know what type of complexion they have.  An easy way to decide is by using those cuff links. Find one piece of yellow gold and one piece of silver or white gold. Perhaps you already know which of the two look better on you. If you tend to wear yellow gold, chances are it is because your warm skin tone is complemented by the warmth of the gold tones. If you look better in silver tones or white metals, most likely you are in the cooler complexion category. If you look great in both, perhaps you have a medium skin tone.

Men with warm skin tones or darker complexions should give vibrant shades of blue such as teal and royal blues a try. No need to throw out those medium blue shirts or suits either. They will also look great on you but try a pop of color with the tie.

Those with medium skin tones and less contrast between their hair color and skin tone should aim for styling with cooler shades of blue. A blue shirt with a silver undertone such as our dusty blue or french blue will look perfect on you. A sky blue will be complimented by a tie with touches of sapphire.

If your complexion is light and cool (high contrast between your hair and skin tone) chances are you will look best in a soft to medium blue with warm undertones. Try a dress blue and pair it with a tie featuring hints of warm orange or wine tones.

Are Gift Certificates Impersonal?

Gift certificates may be a quick and easy gift to give but are they still considered too impersonal?

gift-certificates

In recent years the negative stigma of gift certificates has begun to fade and many thoughtful friends and family have realized it may actually be the perfect gift. Although you may not know what the recipient would buy within a certain shop, you most likely know where it is they prefer to shop. In my opinion, as long as you are gearing the gift certificate toward their interests, you are in great shape. Now, have I mentioned we offer gift certificates? Why Try Custom?

Perhaps you easily fit into an off the rack shirt so an ill fitting shirt isn’t a problem for you. Lucky you! Why then would you want to look into ordering a custom dress shirt or custom dress pants? There are several reasons you may look into the custom option and even more why you may never go back to off the rack.

1. Trends are trendy. For one thing trends are just that: trends. They come and go so quickly you may not even have enough time to get enough wear out of the shirt before it is out of style. Or perhaps you do not like the latest trend in men’s dress shirts or pants. Ever walked into a brick and mortar only to find that the collar style you despise is the only option available in your size? When you go custom, you are able to create the style you want in the size you want, every single time.

Sometimes trendy is tricky.

2. Trouble finding a style that piqued your interest. I often hear men say, for example, they love the round collar a colleague wears but can never seem to find a shirt with this style. Easy fix. You create it with us! Don’t know what that cool style is called? Give us a ring. We can usually help you figure out the name and if there is ever a question, we can google a picture together to make sure it is correct.

Round short collars can be hard to find.

3. Not having to forego one style for another. Yes! You found the round collar in a department store! But wait…the shirt also features a French cuff and you don’t even own a pair of cufflinks. When you go custom, you don’t need to give up that easy to button barrel cuff in order to get the round collar you have been chasing. You style every single detail yourself.

4. Confidence in the same fit every time. Another complaint I hear is that some off the rack clothing claiming to be the same size may fit differently…even from the same vendor…in the same “cut”. When you go custom you don’t need to worry. We create a specific tailoring pattern for you which will only be changed if you ask for it to be changed.

Great fitting shirt every time.

5. Easy to reorder. Many customers love the ease of ordering rather than fighting the crowds in a store. Once you have nailed down the fit and the style you like, it is so easy to just click through to reorder. If you want to make changes, no worries but if not, it is that much simpler.

What Style of Custom Pants You SHOULD Be Wearing

So many men focus on getting a great fitting shirt but often overlook the fact that a great fitting pair of custom pants may be the easiest way to look as if you have lost 10 lbs.  Did you know that some men should avoid pleats while others should never go without them? I will break it down for you not by body type, but by what look you wish to accomplish.

quote2

For those men who want to appear longer and leaner, there are a few simple ways to achieve this with a pair of custom pants. If you want to appear taller, you will need to first opt for a flat front trouser or at the most a single pleat in the front.  The flat front offers the illusion of a more streamlined and tailored fit and leans to a more modern look. Those who want to appear taller also want to opt out of a cuff at all. The cuff tricks the eye into shortening the body even more. If you truly feel you need a cuff, ask for a very short cuff. 1 1/4 inch cuff will suffice.

lookasticpants

For those of you who wish to add a little visual meat to your bones, you want to go for the pleating and avoid a flat front. A pleat creates the illusion that you are fuller than you actually are at the waist and thigh areas. Avoid a boot cut and make sure to go for a cuff. Again the cuff creates a shorter and fuller look which can be needed if you have long legs coupled with a shorter torso.  This will help you appear more proportionate.

Which Spread Collar is Right for You?

When ordering your custom dress shirt, deciding on a collar spread is more of a personal choice than one may think. So which spread collar is right for you? There are many things to consider such as the shape of your face, your style intent, and your body shape.  Let’s break down the three major spreads to find which one is right for you.

Medium Spread

stanleykorshakmedspread

The medium spread collar should be reserved for those looking for a little something different but who want to continue with a reserved and traditional appearance. The medium spread works for most body types and face shapes as well. If you are just beginning to venture away from the traditional point collar, this is where you should start. This spread will work for all body types.

Wide Spread

wide-spread-lookastic

The wide spread collar begins to grab a bit more attention and is noticeably more spread. Although it can be a close rendition of the cutaway or extreme spread, the wide spread often has a soft curve to the collar points. The wide spread collar best works for oval, square or diamond shaped faces and those with a lean or muscular physique. If your face is round, you will want to opt for more of a traditional point or medium spread.

Extreme Wide Spread or “Cutaway”

extrememydapperselftumblr

The extreme spread has a clearly defined straight line created by the collar points. There is no curve to the point. This style is usually suited best for a more modern look or for those interested in a youthful style. This collar style again works for those with an oval, square or diamond shaped face.  Since it enhances the width of the neck, those with a short neck may steer clear. Tip: an extreme spread collar in white on a patterned shirt body kicks it up a notch and don’t forget the wide tie knot. See my post on ideas for tie knots here.

New Ways to Wear Flannel this Fall

We all know that flannel shirts are very popular during the cool months. The most recent flannel buzz is on the more neutral tones while the past few years the focus was on the brightly colored flannels. I personally prefer the softer side flannels in neutrals and subdued shades of blue and green.

flannelpost1
Chambray blazers and flannel shirts are popular this season.

Don’t think for a minute that flannel fabrics are only for shirts. Flannel outerwear has been around for years. Have you ever considered trying a flannel sport coat or cap? How about both?

There are some truly stunning flannel suits out there and we think now is the time to invest in a good one.

Custom Shirt Fabrics Explained

If you are like many, you either don’t know the difference between a Broadcloth or an Oxford fabric or cannot recall when it is time to order your custom dress shirt. Or perhaps you know what you like, but don’t know what it is called. Let’s de-mystify the shirting fabric choices.

Broadcloth can be described as a smooth-finish fabric that is lightweight and breathable. It is considered dressier than an Oxford fabric but due to it’s smoothness, may require more ironing. It has a matte finish to it and works well for dress shirt, casual shirts and tuxedo shirts.

broadcloth
Broadcloth has no texture.

Pinpoint Oxford can be identified by it’s “pinpoint” texture. It has a tiny dotted texture to it and is thicker than a broadcloth. It is very durable and wrinkle resistant and often referred to as a “workhorse” shirting fabric. It is considered less dressy than a broadcloth and is most often worn with a button down collar.

Pinpoint-Oxford
Notice the tiny “Pinpoint” dotted texture.

Royal Oxford is heavier than both the Pinpoint and Broadcloth fabrics. It is both durable and dressy. It can be identified by it’s “basket-weave” or “boxy” texture. It has a slight sheen or luster to it and works with most any collar style. It is a great fall and winter weight fabric.

Twill is another thick Fall and Winter weight fabric choice. It has a distinct diagonal line pattern to it. It also works well with most all collar styles but will not necessarily work for a tuxedo shirt.

Twills have a diagonal line pattern.

Herringbone fabrics have a fishbone pattern to them or an “arrow” look. They are generally thicker but can be found in a lightweight option as well. They give a solid white shirt some character and are best worn without a button down collar.

Layering for Men

If you are anything like my husband, the thought of layering is a bit scary. With a few good tips layering over and under your custom dress shirt may become a little less daunting.

1. Keep the shirt tail of the bottom layer shorter than that of the top layer. If wearing a sweater or vest, make sure the tail of the under-layer doesn’t peek out.

layering7

2. Keep it comfortable and allow movement. Each piece should have a comfortable fit on it’s own but allow enough room once it is layered for free movement. Don’t purchase a sweater without making sure you can comfortably wearing that button down beneath it.

layering

3. Make sure it is easy to remove a layer or two. In case your day heats up make sure the under layer looks crisp and can go solo.

layering4

4. When playing with color, try to go from one extreme to the other. Try lightest to darkest. A light colored shirt, medium sweater, and dark colored coat is a great start or try going the other direction altogether.

layering6

5. Don’t try too many bold colors. Two at the most is my recommendation.

layeringbold

Trendy Tip: Try a skinny tie under a sweater for a modern and youthful look.
