Look Better in Dress Pants

Wearing pants sounds pretty simple, right? The thing is, many of us are getting it wrong. Very wrong. Although I don’t want to move into the “trendy” skinny pant zone, we should review some things you may not realize are aging you or even adding the illusion of an extra 10 pounds.

1. Skip the low rise.

Give a medium rise pant a try. Don’t wear the pants at your naval and don’t wear them hanging out over your hip bones either . If a pant fits in the waist and the rise, it will be somewhere in the middle and you will instantly notice how much more tailored they appear if the pants are sitting in the right spot.

2. Let go of the cuff.

A cuff is not mandatory. For one thing, the larger the cuff the shorter your legs appear. Losing the cuff altogether will instantly create the illusion of leg length.

3. Break some rules.

Try “no break” at the shoe with your next pair of dress slacks. In other words, no bunching of fabric on the top of your shoe. It should slide right over the shoe but not show your ankle.

4. Belt loops are made for belts.

Please wear a belt if you have belt loops. That’s all I can say about that.

5. Avoid the pleat like the plague.

Pleats may be your go-to as you think a flat front pant will create the side “pocket-pull” issue. The fact is, if the slanted side pocket is pulling, the pants are too small in the hip or seat area. If you ask around, you may start to realize that for one thing, pleated pants are dated and they actually make you look larger than you are. If you increase the size of the pant but try a flat front, you may be surprised at how much thinner you appear. Now I realize if you up the size of your pant, the waist may then be too large. Two options here. You can either have the waist taken in by a local tailor or you could give a custom pant a try.

Can Men Wear Winter White?

Winter white is a great option for staying in style during the colder months. There are some tricks to pull it off, though. Here are some of our thoughts.

1. Choose a heavier white fabric like white denim or wool for pants.  We also love an off-white wool sweater or cardigan. No lightweight white linen please. For one thing, you will feel the winter chill roll through the fabric but it will also appear out of place in freezing temps.

2. Generally we don’t advise layering too many dark fabrics on your upper body while keeping things white and light on the lower portion. It is hard to pull off. So how is it this guy looks so dapper, you ask?

Simple, he added a solid colored shirt with a white collar. I might have chosen a neutral toned coat instead of navy, myself.

3. Try a speckled “whitish” sweater on top to look and feel cozy. It isn’t exactly winter white. Perhaps it is even better.

4. Adding neutrals to the rest of the body helps to create a soft minimalist style with a pair of crisp white chinos.

What is so great about white pants? For one thing, you usually don’t wear them often throughout the year so they will likely stay in tact if you find a nice durable pair.

Why Try Custom?

Perhaps you easily fit into an off the rack shirt so an ill fitting shirt isn’t a problem for you. Lucky you! Why then would you want to look into ordering a custom dress shirt or custom dress pants? There are several reasons you may look into the custom option and even more why you may never go back to off the rack.

1. Trends are trendy. For one thing trends are just that: trends. They come and go so quickly you may not even have enough time to get enough wear out of the shirt before it is out of style. Or perhaps you do not like the latest trend in men’s dress shirts or pants. Ever walked into a brick and mortar only to find that the collar style you despise is the only option available in your size? When you go custom, you are able to create the style you want in the size you want, every single time.

Sometimes trendy is tricky.

2. Trouble finding a style that piqued your interest. I often hear men say, for example, they love the round collar a colleague wears but can never seem to find a shirt with this style. Easy fix. You create it with us! Don’t know what that cool style is called? Give us a ring. We can usually help you figure out the name and if there is ever a question, we can google a picture together to make sure it is correct.

Round short collars can be hard to find.

3. Not having to forego one style for another. Yes! You found the round collar in a department store! But wait…the shirt also features a French cuff and you don’t even own a pair of cufflinks. When you go custom, you don’t need to give up that easy to button barrel cuff in order to get the round collar you have been chasing. You style every single detail yourself.

4. Confidence in the same fit every time. Another complaint I hear is that some off the rack clothing claiming to be the same size may fit differently…even from the same vendor…in the same “cut”. When you go custom you don’t need to worry. We create a specific tailoring pattern for you which will only be changed if you ask for it to be changed.

5. Easy to reorder. Many customers love the ease of ordering rather than fighting the crowds in a store. Once you have nailed down the fit and the style you like, it is so easy to just click through to reorder. If you want to make changes, no worries but if not, it is that much simpler.

What Style of Custom Pants You SHOULD Be Wearing

So many men focus on getting a great fitting shirt but often overlook the fact that a great fitting pair of custom pants may be the easiest way to look as if you have lost 10 lbs.  Did you know that some men should avoid pleats while others should never go without them? I will break it down for you not by body type, but by what look you wish to accomplish.

quote2

For those men who want to appear longer and leaner, there are a few simple ways to achieve this with a pair of custom pants. If you want to appear taller, you will need to first opt for a flat front trouser or at the most a single pleat in the front.  The flat front offers the illusion of a more streamlined and tailored fit and leans to a more modern look. Those who want to appear taller also want to opt out of a cuff at all. The cuff tricks the eye into shortening the body even more. If you truly feel you need a cuff, ask for a very short cuff. 1 1/4 inch cuff will suffice.

For those of you who wish to add a little visual meat to your bones, you want to go for the pleating and avoid a flat front. A pleat creates the illusion that you are fuller than you actually are at the waist and thigh areas. Avoid a boot cut and make sure to go for a cuff. Again the cuff creates a shorter and fuller look which can be needed if you have long legs coupled with a shorter torso.  This will help you appear more proportionate.

Fall Fashion 2015

Many things on the men’s runway for this season cannot reasonable carry over into your workweek wardrobe like fur, shearling, or velvet coats. (If you do work in this type of environment, please send us some pics!) There are, however some items I truly think you should consider working into your wardrobe this fall. I chose 5 and recommend you pick up 3.

1. Something Burgundy: As I have mentioned before in this blog post this color is going to be everywhere. You may refer to it as Marsala, Wine, or even “Soft-Eggplant” but this purplish-red is making a major statement this Fall. Try the color out in a tie or custom dress shirt like this.

Just add a hint of this fashionable color to your current wardrobe.

Our Raisin Twill solid tie will go great with any suit this Fall.

2. Brown: It goes with EVERYTHING so this is a no-brainer. Brown is back and layering the hues is even better.  Perhaps pick up a waist coat to pair with your favorite brown blazer. You can even pair the color with black these days.

His matching vest and coat in neutral brown gives him loads of options for shirt and tie colors.

3. The Baggy Pant: Perhaps you just caught onto the more slim fit pant and don’t want to invest in another pair. Well, good news if you didn’t throw out the wide leg trousers, they are headed back our way.

fallfashiontrends15
If working the baggy pant into your wardrobe, make sure the shirt is nice and fitted but the coat (if any) cannot be too tailored.

4.  The Long Scarf: I recommend keeping this trend reasonable with a nice below the front pocket length or just above the knee.

fallfashion153
Without going to bold on the color, his scarf adds punch with it’s length.

5. Oversized and 3/4 Length Coats: The skinny suit can hang on another few seasons for you if you add a slightly oversized coat to the mix. I like the length of this one and the twill pattern is unique.

fallfashion154
His pant, turtleneck and coat are still a bit trim so he is able to pair them nicely with his oversized 3/4 coat.

How to Add Color to Your Wardrobe

One of the big colors we will see in Fall is Red. Whether it be a Candy Apple,  Burnt Orange-red or a Burgundy, you need to add some of this to your wardrobe for Fall 2015. Let’s think outside the staple red tie and accessorize elsewhere. Here are few other options you may want to try out this year.

A Bold Shoe: With a shoe this bright, avoid too much else going on with your wardrobe.

Socks with Interest: Roll up your pant cuffs to show off some color.

Bright Suspenders: Matching your suspenders to a button hole stitching detail in the coat makes for a smooth outfit.
