Should You Starch Your Dress Shirts?

Many customers ask us which of our shirting fabrics “hold starch the most”. I tend to answer this question with a question. “Why exactly do you want or need to starch your dress shirt?” The most important thing to remember is that the regular use of starch drastically reduces the lifespan of your shirts.  So, is it worth it?

designershirt8

If you feel you must starch the body and sleeves of the shirt for wrinkling, chances are the fabric quality and thread count is quite low. If you feel that the cuff and collar are in need of being pressed, perhaps the interfacing (also known as fusing) is the culprit. A higher quality fusing can quickly resolve this. Read here about our high quality German interfacing.

My advice to these customers is to buy a high thread count quality dress shirt and insist in having a reinforced collar and cuff. We have some great options in our Deluxe and Luxury fabric lines. The higher the thread count, the less wrinkling.  If you do, however choose to continue with starching your shirts, try a light starch or do it less often.

The Essential Chambray Shirt

If you are a man, nothing says Spring like a chambray shirt on your back. Women dig them and luckily, the fabric feels great on your skin. It is light, breathable, and the casual wrinkling makes the natural fibers obvious.

Contrary to popular belief, it can be dressed up a notch. Add a light colored suit and pocket square but leave off the tie.

Chambray pairs well with a linen coat or suit.

Create a different look by ordering custom with us and specifying white stitching along the collar, cuff, and or placket.

White collar stitching accented by a white pocket square makes this chambray shirt stand out.

Tired of the denim hue in Chambray? Try a brighter color like pink or a brighter blue. We have both colors in stock in our Deluxe line.

Spring Menswear Trend: Polka Dots

A classic print that never goes out of style, the polka dot is back with a vengeance this Spring and Summer 2016 in menswear. We have all noticed that the patterned suit is currently a big hit which means there are so many great ways to wear this style.

Let’s start with the least investment: The pocket square. With something so small, you can add a bolder print like this. Don’t overload the eye with lots of bold prints. This good fellow kept the rest of the look solid.

polkadots1

Or try a small scarf this Spring. Men can wear scarves year round. Going into the warmer months, choose a smaller one like this that just adds a hint of style.

polkadots2

Of course there is the polka dot tie. Perhaps you already own this wardrobe staple.

polkadots3

Looking for more of a statement than the accessories? Try a bold polka dot shirt. We love this burgundy toned variation.

Feeling like going all in? Try your printed suit in the dapper dot.

A great reason to invest a little or a lot in this small print trend is that you can wear it from not until eternity. Dress Well! Be Well!

Short Sleeved Shirts #1 Complaint

When asked what makes most style experts hate men’s short sleeved shirts so much, the complaint of the “ill fit” came back time and time again. Make sure to check out my first blog post about short sleeved shirts here for some other great short sleeve shirt styling tips.

shortsleeve224

Here are our questions and answers leading you to the perfect short sleeve shirt this Spring.

Question: What is the #1 thing you can do to help your personal style?

Answer: Get the fit right.

Which brings us to the next question: What’s the #1 factor in getting the fit right in a short sleeved shirt?

Answer: Making sure the yoke into the sleeve fits well.

Which brings up a few more questions: How do you know if the fit is right in the shoulder and the sleeve?

The yoke should fit comfortably along the upper back with the sleeve seam at the armhole resting perfectly on top of the ball of the shoulder. If any buttons begin to pull at the chest area, the shoulder may be too tight.

And the sleeve length and fullness?

Answer: To find where the short sleeve should end, flex your bicep and find the center of the bicep with your other hand. This should be the end of the sleeve. Keeping the flex in the bicep, you should have just a little comfortable allowance beyond one finger width.

Expert style tip: An option for an existing shirt is rolling the short sleeve  up to the bicep center.

All of these fit options are an easy fix when you order a custom dress shirt with us. Interested? Click here to get started.

3 Shirt Style Tricks to Appear Thinner

When ordering a custom dress shirt with us, I often advise that a few styling option tips can go a long way. You may have always ordered a wide spread collar because you like they way your colleague looks in it. What if another option could help you appear thinner? Here are three small tricks to help you when you place your next order with us.

1. Get a shirt that truly fits.

chambray4-204x300

Of course you should make sure the shirt fits in the chest and waist  but has it occurred to you that the sleeve fullness of your shirt can also create the illusion that you are larger or smaller than you truly are?

2. Try a hidden button front style.

ditchthehoodie5

We refer to it as a “fly front” as in the fly on your pants. The buttons are hidden behind an extra strip of fabric.  That crisp clean look down the front of your shirt can assist in making you appear thinner. Plus it just looks great!

3. Choose a point collar with a vertical stripe.

silkscarf1

A point collar is a go-to for all face shapes as it typically works for everyone. It elongates the face a bit which will help you appear slimmer. A vertical stripe assists in the thinner illusion.

Now put them altogether by ordering a custom dress shirt with us! Get started here. Dress Well! Be Well! -Meghan Henley Follow me on Twitter @BestCustomShirt

Restyle Your Button Down

Looking for some great ways to layer your button down dress shirt with style? Or even your favorite polo? Mixing up sweater styles and patterns is the way to keep your favorite casual dress shirt looking fresh this season.

1. Mix up your patterns: Layering a white sweater with a stripe over a brightly colored check or plaid will keep you looking sharp.

Tip: Make sure the stripes are a neutral color.  He wears a navy stripe which goes with just about everything.

2. Add a blazer and pocket square to your favorite chambray button down.

3. Class up your hoodie. Who says you have to wear a tee underneath your favorite drawstring sweatshirt or hoodie?

Tip: Make sure the hoodie fits you well. No bulky sweatshirts, Gents.

4. Or class it up with a tie and preppy cricket sweater.

Menswear Plaid Knowledge

Definitely the most familiar plaid in menswear must be a windowpane check, right? Not necessarily, gents. There are many that you may be forgetting about. Let’s review the most popular and ways to wear them.

For a bold look, choose a windowpane check as the vertical and horizontal lines are typically thick and obvious. They create a large window like pattern and can really catch the eye. These are often found on men’s suits but are also found on men’s shirts. If you are wearing a windowpane shirt, keep the suit a solid color or a small pinstripe should work.

Of course, when thinking of men’s suits we must not forget the glen plaid. It is usually found with a broken pattern of checks and made with woven twill.

A glen plaid is a classic suit staple.

For a warm and classic look, perhaps you should throw a little hounds tooth into your cool weather wardrobe this season. This pattern is characterized by the jagged checker type pattern shown below and is classically found in shades of black and white but has many options in the current menswear field. The hounds tooth pattern size itself varies and is more masculine when it is found in a smaller size. If you really want to spice things up, find a bold colored hounds tooth. Who’s stopping you?

Gray hounds tooth can be a twist on the classic black and white.

If you want to add some casual cool to your plaid style, I would recommend going for a tartan plaid or colorful madras custom dress shirt. Flannel fabrics are trending and venture into the tartan areas quite nicely.

Madras is a versatile fabric and can be worn in both long and short sleeve shirts. We currently have lots of casual checks and plaids in stock. Check them out here.

However you choose to wear your plaid, wear it proudly!

How Suspenders Can Improve Your Appearance

I’m sure by now you dapper dudes know that suspenders can be a great alternative to wearing a belt. Did you know however that suspenders can actually improve your appearance over the staple of a belt? For one thing, when the shirt is tucked and fits correctly, it creates a nice streamlined waist. Shirt not fitting all that well? Click here to order a custom dress shirt with us.

suspenders1

If you can check a great fitting shirt off the list, how about the pant waist? Often, we cinch the belt in to decrease the waist of the pant causing the pant waist fabric to bunch in some areas. If suspenders are worn correctly, it can keep a great fit at the waist and not double any fabric over. Thirdly, suspenders can help in getting the perfect pant “break” at the shoe. Cool, huh?

suspenders2

Now, let’s talk about the suspenders themselves and how they should be worn. First and foremost, never wear both a belt and suspenders. It’s one or the other, gents. If you have the option of suspenders with buttons or snaps, we say you should choose the buttons.  Did I mention we also make custom pants? Click here to check them out. Thirdly, choose whether you are going full elastic or not. Most all suspenders come in either full elastic or partial. We prefer either a nice durable suspender fabric in full or leather suspender with partial elastic bottoms.
