Layer Up your Spring Style

Spring is such a great time for those transition wardrobe pieces from the chilly mornings to the sunny afternoons.  Layering these pieces, however can sometimes seem a bit daunting. Some guys seem to just know how to layer. They always look clean and well put together. Here are a few tips for your Spring layering challenge.

1. Mix up your textures and patterns. Try a light tweed sport coat over a chambray shirt, a plaid coat and patterned scarf, or your softest cashmere V-neck over your shirt and tie with a pair of heavier twill pants.

2. Use accessories wisely. If thinking of wearing a suit with a lightweight scarf, try ditching the tie and wearing your collar open.

3. Give a trend a try. You may be sighting a few floral prints on men these days but that doesn’t mean you have to wear a floral button down shirt. Try a pop of floral in a tie.

4. Add color. Pair a crisp white shirt with a bold pair of chinos for instant style. Add a scarf and sunglasses for affect.

5. Or don’t. Try a minimalist monochrome layering technique. All shades of gray or tan.

Should You Starch Your Dress Shirts?

Many customers ask us which of our shirting fabrics “hold starch the most”. I tend to answer this question with a question. “Why exactly do you want or need to starch your dress shirt?” The most important thing to remember is that the regular use of starch drastically reduces the lifespan of your shirts.  So, is it worth it?

designershirt8

If you feel you must starch the body and sleeves of the shirt for wrinkling, chances are the fabric quality and thread count is quite low. If you feel that the cuff and collar are in need of being pressed, perhaps the interfacing (also known as fusing) is the culprit. A higher quality fusing can quickly resolve this. Read here about our high quality German interfacing.

Design 2

My advice to these customers is to buy a high thread count quality dress shirt and insist in having a reinforced collar and cuff. We have some great options in our Deluxe and Luxury fabric lines. The higher the thread count, the less wrinkling.  If you do, however choose to continue with starching your shirts, try a light starch or do it less often.

Spring Menswear Trend: Polka Dots

A classic print that never goes out of style, the polka dot is back with a vengeance this Spring and Summer 2016 in menswear. We have all noticed that the patterned suit is currently a big hit which means there are so many great ways to wear this style.

Let’s start with the least investment: The pocket square. With something so small, you can add a bolder print like this. Don’t overload the eye with lots of bold prints. This good fellow kept the rest of the look solid.

Or try a small scarf this Spring. Men can wear scarves year round. Going into the warmer months, choose a smaller one like this that just adds a hint of style.

Of course there is the polka dot tie. Perhaps you already own this wardrobe staple.

Looking for more of a statement than the accessories? Try a bold polka dot shirt. We love this burgundy toned variation.

Feeling like going all in? Try your printed suit in the dapper dot.

A great reason to invest a little or a lot in this small print trend is that you can wear it from not until eternity. Dress Well! Be Well!

Should You Wear Brown Shoes or Black?

The dreaded question: Should you wear brown shoes or black? Whether it is casual or dress, we often have a hard time determining what color shoe we should go with. Here are some helpful hints that will hopefully point you in the right direction.

brown-shoes-or-black

1. Begin with the color of the clothing itself. If you are gearing toward mostly neutrals, the easiest option is brown. If you are in a gray or charcoal suit, the best choice would be black.

2. If wearing blue, things can get a little confusing. I recommend a black shoe with a darker navy or bold blue suit. If you are wearing a navy pant and sky blue dress shirt without a tie, try the more casual brown shoe.

3. Are you adding vibrant colors to your outfit such as red or purple? Generally these bold choices should lead you to the black shoe.

4.  Ask yourself what belt seems appropriate? It is best to match your shoes to your belt when possible.

5. If you are wearing a lighter neutral suit, maybe try the black shoe and belt for a bold statement. If the dress is more casual, (sans suit), choose the brown.

When in doubt, ask someone. That is what the mirror selfie is for after all, right?

Look Better in Dress Pants

Wearing pants sounds pretty simple, right? The thing is, many of us are getting it wrong. Very wrong. Although I don’t want to move into the “trendy” skinny pant zone, we should review some things you may not realize are aging you or even adding the illusion of an extra 10 pounds.

1. Skip the low rise.

Give a medium rise pant a try. Don’t wear the pants at your naval and don’t wear them hanging out over your hip bones either . If a pant fits in the waist and the rise, it will be somewhere in the middle and you will instantly notice how much more tailored they appear if the pants are sitting in the right spot.

2. Let go of the cuff.

A cuff is not mandatory. For one thing, the larger the cuff the shorter your legs appear. Losing the cuff altogether will instantly create the illusion of leg length.

pantpost2

3. Break some rules.

Try “no break” at the shoe with your next pair of dress slacks. In other words, no bunching of fabric on the top of your shoe. It should slide right over the shoe but not show your ankle.

4. Belt loops are made for belts.

Please wear a belt if you have belt loops. That’s all I can say about that.

pantpost

5. Avoid the pleat like the plague.

Pleats may be your go-to as you think a flat front pant will create the side “pocket-pull” issue. The fact is, if the slanted side pocket is pulling, the pants are too small in the hip or seat area. If you ask around, you may start to realize that for one thing, pleated pants are dated and they actually make you look larger than you are. If you increase the size of the pant but try a flat front, you may be surprised at how much thinner you appear. Now I realize if you up the size of your pant, the waist may then be too large. Two options here. You can either have the waist taken in by a local tailor or you could give a custom pant a try.

Men’s Casual Vests and Formal Vests

Vests. Waistcoats. Whatever you call them they can be both elegant and useful. Today we will talk about how to wear them in two different situations.

vestgq

Going casual? The vest can be added warmth throughout the colder months and can be added into most all of your casual wear looks.

Casual Style Tip 1:  Leave the bottom button undone and perhaps even the top.

veststylishwife

Casual Style Tip 2 : Mix up textures and patterns of your shirt, vest, and tie if you choose to wear one.

vestdontcatchafallingknife

Sprucing up a bit? In a dressier situation the vest can be added to create a more modern or even classic look.

Dressy Style Tip 1: Match colors and even the fabric type of vest to the coat.

Dressy Style Tip 2: Keep the angle or curve of the collar consistent with that of the vest.

Restyle Your Button Down

Looking for some great ways to layer your button down dress shirt with style? Or even your favorite polo? Mixing up sweater styles and patterns is the way to keep your favorite casual dress shirt looking fresh this season.

1. Mix up your patterns: Layering a white sweater with a stripe over a brightly colored check or plaid will keep you looking sharp.

Tip: Make sure the stripes are a neutral color.  He wears a navy stripe which goes with just about everything.

2. Add a blazer and pocket square to your favorite chambray button down.

3. Class up your hoodie. Who says you have to wear a tee underneath your favorite drawstring sweatshirt or hoodie?

Tip: Make sure the hoodie fits you well. No bulky sweatshirts, Gents.

4. Or class it up with a tie and preppy cricket sweater.

Winter Layering Tips to Stay Warm and Stylish

You can stay warm this winter in style. Here are some things to keep in mind as you pile the layers on.

1. Layer different textures and patterns. Try mixing up some of those things in your closet you wouldn’t normally put together.

2. Try a monochrome theme. Grays are easy to mix and match and don’t be afraid of adding some camel colored leather accessories like shoes and a belt.

3. Or do just the opposite. Add layers of vibrant jewel toned colors.
